Another Tiger Puzzle with Amelia

Here's another tiger puzzle that Amelia and I put together.  Seconds after we took this picture, we dismantled it and started a new one--without a tiger for once!

Solar Robots with Calvin

Here are two solar powered robots that Calvin and I made from a kit.  They work well in the Southern California sunshine!

But when the sun's not out, we use a 500 W halogen light!

Here's the OWI 14-in-1 Solar Robot kit that we bought from amazon.

Tiger Puzzle with Amelia

Here's a puzzle that Amelia and I completed a few months ago.  It was a pretty tough one with all the black, white and whiskers!

Third Camping Trip to Anzo Borrego

Calvin and I camped in Sheep Canyon in Anzo Borrego Desert State Park in April 2015. One of our hikes was to the palm trees in the picture to the left. We didn't quite make it to the palms in the distance because we ran into an impassable water fall (well, it might have been passable but it was risky and we didn't feel like getting stuck in the desert with a broken leg or worse!).

Along the way, we saw tiny little black worms in a stream. They attached themselves to the rocks and swayed back and forth in the current grabbing little morsels out of the water and gobbling them up.  We think they're a new species and have named them calvinus wormicus.

(Update:  After a bit of Googling, it appears these "worms" are actually fly larvae. They looked and acted exactly like Black Fly larvae as described on the Wikipedia page and shown here.  Plus, we did see lots of black flies around our camp site and by the streams. Oh well, we'll have to wait a bit longer to discover a new species...)

One of the highlights of the trip was seeing two turtles. One walked right into our camp and hung around for about a half hour munching on any green plants it could find (not many!). The other was the one on the left which was just a baby which Calvin spotted at the beginning of one of our hikes.

Even though we didn't spot any "borregos" or bighorn sheep, it was still a fun trip with fun hikes around the mountain streams.
